the total greenhouse gas emissions caused by an individual, event, organization, or product

CARBON NEUTRAL

having or resulting in no net addition of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere

CERTIFIED B CORPORATION

businesses that are legally required to consider the impact of their decisions on their workers, customers, suppliers, community, and the environment

CIRCULAR ECONOMY

a system that is restorative or regenerative by intention and design that works to replace the end-of-life concept, shift toward renewable energy, stop the use of toxic chemicals, and eliminate waste by designing better materials, products, systems and business models

CIRCULAR FASHION

clothes, shoes or accessories that are designed, sourced, produced and supplied with the intention to be used and circulate responsibly and effectively in society for as long as possible and then safely returned to the biosphere

CLIMATE CHANGE

significant and long-lasting change in the Earth's climate and weather patterns

CO2 EMISSIONS

considered a greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide (CO2) is a colorless, odourless and non-poisonous gas formed by the combustion of carbon and respiration of living organisms; emissions are the release of greenhouse gases and/or their precursors into the atmosphere

FOREST STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL

international non-profit, multi-stakeholder organization established in 1993 to promote responsible management of the world's forests by setting standards for forest products, along with certifying and labeling them as eco-friendly 

FOREST STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL CERTIFICATION

FSC certification is considered to be the "gold standard" designation for wood harvested from forests that are responsibly managed, socially beneficial, environmentally conscious, and economically viable

an innovation challenge initiated by H&M Foundation, aiming to make fashion circular

GLOBAL RECYCLED STANDARD (GRS)

an international, voluntary, full product standard that provides requirements for third-party certification of recycled content, chain of custody, social and environmental practices, and chemical restrictions along with tracking and tracing of recycled materials

GLOBAL WARMING

an increase in the Earth's atmospheric and oceanic temperatures widely predicted to occur due to an increase in the greenhouse effect resulting especially from pollution

GREENHOUSE EFFECT

warming of the Earth's surface and the air above it, caused by gases in the air that trap energy from the sun; these heat-trapping gases are called greenhouse gases and some of the most common ones are water vapor, carbon dioxide, and methane

HUMANITY

compassionate, sympathetic, or generous behavior or disposition; the quality or state of being humane

ORGANIC

a natural fibre that is grown without chemical fertilizers, growth stimulants, antibiotics, or cancer-causing pesticides

PROGRAMME FOR THE ENDORSEMENT OF FOREST CERTIFICATION (PEFC)

an international, non-profit, non-governmental organization that promotes sustainable forest management through independent third party certification, considered to be the certification system of choice for small forest owners

PEFC CHAIN OF CUSTODY CERTIFICATION

independently verifies that the certified forest-based material contained in a product comes from sustainably managed forests 

POLYURETHANE (PU)

used in the production of a variety of materials, PU is a polymer composed of organic units joined by carbamate (urethane) links 

PROTA FIORI

to protect the flora and the fauna; PROTA (to protect) + FIORI (the flowers)

RAW MATERIAL

crude or processed material that can be converted by manufacture, processing, or combination into a new and useful product

REACH

Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) is a European Union regulation that addresses the production and use of chemical substances, and their potential impacts on both human health and the environment

REACH CERTIFICATE OF COMPLIANCE

a document certifying that a product is compliant with the EU REACH regulation

RECYCLED 

made with materials that have been extracted, reclaimed, and reconditioned for a new use to minimize the flow of waste into landfills

RENEWABLE ENERGY 

energy that is collected from resources that are naturally replenished (such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves, and geothermal heat)

RETE CLIMA 

Italian for “climate network”, a non-profit organization that promotes corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability in the private sector and public procurement

SOLAR ENERGY 

radiant light and heat from the sun that is harnessed using technologies such as solar heating, photovoltaics, solar thermal energy, solar architecture, molten salt power plants and artificial photosynthesis

UPCYCLE

to recycle something in such a way that the resulting product is greater in value than the original item

VEGETABLE TANNED LEATHER

also known as “natural leather”, refers to leather made with tannins derived from plants (such as oak and spruce bark, quebracho, tara pods, olive leaves, rhubarb roots or mimosa); these substances are placed in a pit along with the skins and hides instead of chrome or metal for the leather tanning process

ZERO EMISSIONS

a product, service, or activity that does not contribute to global warming because its CO2 and greenhouse gas emissions are equal to zero
